To qualify for the Advanced Operations Certificate, you must complete both an online exam and an in-person flight review. Requirements include:

Yes. In Canada, anyone flying a drone weighing between 250g and 25kg for work or recreation must have a valid drone license issued by Transport Canada. There are two types of drone licenses: Basic and Advanced.
The Basic Operations Certificate is the foundational certification required for flying drones in Canada for recreational or limited commercial purposes within specific, low-risk environments. This certification allows you to operate a Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) under 250g to 25kg within controlled parameters, typically away from people, air traffic, and critical infrastructure. Completing this certificate ensures that you understand essential air regulations, safety procedures, and flight restrictions to operate responsibly and in compliance with Transport Canada’s guidelines.

To obtain the Basic Operations Certificate, you must complete an online exam provided by Transport Canada. This exam covers topics such as:
- Airspace Classification & Restrictions: Understanding where and when you can fly.
- Flight Safety: Knowing pre-flight checklists, weather considerations, and risk management.
- Basic Navigation: Learning about flight paths, altitude limits, and monitoring surroundings.
After passing the online exam, you’ll be authorized to fly within the basic operations limitations. No in-person flight review is required for this certificate level, making it a straightforward option to get started with safe, legal drone operations.
Transport Canada offers two types of drone licenses:
Basic Operations Certificate – for flying in uncontrolled airspace.
Advanced Operations Certificate – required for flying in controlled airspace or near people.

To get a drone license in Canada, you must:
